Plumbing problems within your business building should be dealt with during the warmer months as a preventive measure against winter flooding and mold damage. This may also prevent the need to claim on your ME business insurance policy and help your business avoid incurring any extra expenses in the process.

Important matters to attend to include water pipe leakage, as well as ensuring pipes are adequately insulated and protected from wind to prevent them from freezing and possibly bursting. Apart from a visual inspection, a leak might be indicated if there is an unexpected increase in water usage bills or there are water stains or moldy odors in the building. When pipe leakage is suspected, you should attend to it as quickly as possible.

To prevent pipes from freezing, they should be insulated with rubber, fiberglass, or thermal heat tape and protected from exposure to excess winter wind. Opening sink and bathroom cabinet doors during cold weather may also help by circulating warm air around the pipes – as long as the internal temperature of the building is maintained above 60°F.

It’s important to deal with plumbing problems quickly. If a leak is detected, for instance, get it attended to by a qualified plumber as soon as possible before the problem gets worse, and preferably before the really cold weather sets in. It’s also important to annually review your ME business insurance to ensure your coverage is adequate to protect your business assets at all times!
