Laptops have the advantage of being very portable, and it’s easy to be a bit relaxed about their security. The problem with business laptop theft is not only the value of the item, but the data recovery that might be required, as well as the fact that thieves could use the information stored on them maliciously. While your business might have ME business insurance to recover some of the loss, it makes more sense to avoid the loss and claims in the first place if at all possible.

Fortunately, it is possible to improve security for laptops, by storing them in a safe or secure office overnight and protecting them with passwords. However, if employees take them home, they may need to be instructed about security, as it’s easy to take laptops wherever you go and possibly leave them on a car seat or in a café, or to accidentally drop them. Also, if the laptops contain information not held on the business’s main servers, they should have regular backups done to ensure data safety in case of loss.

Another matter to consider is that of insurance. While it’s generally standard to include computers in insurance policies, laptops may get treated like an added extra and overlooked. As well as improvements to security, it may be important in some cases to also ensure that your company laptops are included in your ME business insurance policy and your inventory list in case of loss!
